DMV College hockey games for the weekend of 10/18-10/20, 2019
We’re back for another weekend of college hockey here in the DMV and the season is heating up. We’ve actually got a good bit of teams on bye’s this weekend, but we also have some DMV head-to-head matchups going down with some serious power ranking implications on the line!
VT and Navy Clash for a Cause
The Navy D2 (2-4-0-0) Midshipmen will be traveling to Blacksburg to take on #5 Virginia Tech (6-2-0-2) for a special event honoring the memory of former Navy player Jason Jablonski to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Hokies will be breaking out special jerseys (seen below) that will be available for auction after the game with all the proceeds going to the LLSUSA. If you’re in the area, go see this game, stop by and support the cause, and have an incredible night!
Newly Ranked Newport Hits the Road
The newly Chirpin’ DMV ranked #8 Christopher Newport (6-3-0-0) hits the road this weekend to take on UNCW, who is coming off a weekend sweep over Elon, and this is also a UNCW team that split a weekend series with #5 ranked Virginia Tech. A big weekend sweep here for CNU would get them to 8-3 and a potential look at the top 5?
Wahoos and Dukes Throwdown
The also newly ranked #7 Virginia Cavaliers (4-2-0-0) are hosting a struggling JMU team (0-6-0-0) tonight. This is a game that Virginia should not overlook, as JMU is hungry and looking for their first win after playing a good Maryland team in a tight 3-1 game just last weekend. I’M NOT SAYING, but just sayin’, don’t sleep on this Dukes team, UVA.. or you could find yourselves on #UpsetAlert
Heavy Slate for the Horses
The #3 Stevenson (4-1-0-0) green horses have a toughhhhhh weekend ahead of them, but if playing in their favor, they’ll leave Sunday with a massive boost in the ACHA D2 standings as well as the Chirpin power rankings (well, they are #3, so could only potentially climb so high) They’ll host NC State, who just handed Liberty D2 their first loss of the season, on Friday night. This Wolfpack team is coming in at 5-1-0-0, and is averaging 10.2 goals per game in their 5 wins. Don’t take this Penn State team lightly either, coming in at 5-2-0-1, who will be taking on the Terps the night before.
Gulls Take Flight Twice
Both Salisbury teams are in action this weekend, and after a bye weekend, the Patriot team (1-1-0-0) will be hosting Gettysburg, while the #4 National team (6-2-0-1) will be traveling to New Jersey for a road tilt vs Rowan. Keep an eye on Jack Petersohn who’s at a 10G-5A-15PTS clip though 9 games. Gulls look for a win to stay high in the power rankings and stay hot as they await the return of Sophomore Luke Sprague.
I Like Turtles
Both the Lady Terps (3-1-0-0) and Men’s D2 Terps (3-1-0-2) are in action this weekend. The girls look to continue their winning streak by adding a game to the W column as they have a single game, traveling to Montclair State. The Men’s team looks to turn it around after a less than ideal showing at the ACCHL Virginia Invitational last weekend where they went 1-2, dropping two in OT. They’ll host Penn State this weekend, tonight and Sunday. They may get a gassed Penn State team who will be coming into their 3rd game of the weekend for Sundays contest.
NOVA Travels to Liberty
NOVA CC (0-2-0-0) will be hitting the road to take on a D3 Liberty Team (2-3-0-0) that’s fresh off a bye week and looking to get above .500. This NOVA team will have a tough go as they look for their first win of the season on the road at arguably the best barn in the DMV and what will be a ROCKIN LaHaye Center in the mist of a six game Liberty weekend between the D1, D2, and D3 teams.
Lady Liberty
The Lady Flames D1 Team (7-1-0-1) has a jam packed weekend with three games after playing one last night in which they defeated UMASS Amherst, 3-0. They’ll go toe-to-toe with Amherst again tonight before heading to Rhode Island for a two game series on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully they don’t hit a wall and can let it ride all weekend for a huge four game sweep to get them to 10 wins.
Flames Homestand
Both the #2 D1 Mens Liberty (7-0-0-0) and #1 D2 Liberty Mens team (9-1-0-0) are at home this weekend with their D3 brothers for some big series. D1 gets a reeling Syracuse team at 1-2-0-1. Last season, Liberty went 3-2 vs Cuse. D2 on the other hand will be hosting a Drexel team who’s coming off a win last weekend over Seton Hall.
Rebound Weekend
After a disappointing weekend where both teams went win-less, VCU (0-3-0-0) will have a home and home with Old Dominion (2-4-0-0) Both teams are looking to turn it around here in the early go, and after last weekend, I’d imagine both team wouldn’t LOVE a split, but would be satisfied with a win.
The same story goes for Radford (0-3-0-0) and American (0-4-0-0) who will play a weekend series at American. Both of these teams are desperate for a win, so look for a physical, fast moving series this weekend.
Alumni Weekend
It’s alumni weekend for the Towson Tigers (1-7-0-0) as they’ll be holding their alumni game at 6:30 on Saturday, right before the team takes on Temple at 7:45, so look for a ruckus crowd this weekend as they take on Temple Friday night as well, looking to get another win.
Mason Wants to Streak
#9 George Mason (4-3-0-1) is back in action this weekend as they travel to take on Rowan tonight. The Patriots dispatched Rowan last weekend en route to a 2-0 weekend, so they’ll be looking to keep the streak alive vs a familiar foe.
Birds are Back
Catholic U (2-1-0-0) is back in action after a bye week but only have one game on the docket, Saturday vs Franklin & Marshall. The Cardinals haven’t played many games yet this season, and coming off a bye, they’re hoping they don’t have any rust to shake off.
Roady to Rhode
#10 Navy Mens D1 (4-3-0-1) is hittin the road after a huge weekend where they won both in Annapolis last week. They head to Rhode Isalnd, who got dismantled by Liberty last weekend so the Midshipmen are hoping the Rams are still licking their wounds and they can jump on em twice to keep the streak alive.
SEE YA NEXT WEEKEND
The following teams have bye weekends: UMBC (0-3-0-0), Richmond (1-3-0-0), Johns Hopkins (0-1-0-0), William & Mary (1-4-0-0), #6 George Washington (4-1-0-0), Georgetown (2-3-0-0), Liberty Womens D2 (2-0-0-0), Navy Girls (5-1-1-0), Towson Women (1-2-0-0), Loyola Womens (1-1-0-0), GW Womens (0-4-0-0)
