It’s Friday night in the DMV which mean High School hockey is BUZZINNNNNNNNNN around the area. Roll a dice, pick a rink, and walk in and it’s sure to be a jumpin’ night with high caliber match-ups, student sections bouncin off the walls, and some good ole fashion chirpin’ as rivals go head to head. We’ll spotlight the teams with social media to give you a rundown of all games in the DMV. (Word to the wise for these posts.. we’re promoting teams that promote themselves, so if your social media game is 100 and you’re making an effort, we’ll toss it in the weekly blog for ya)
CSHL
Washington-Liberty (3-1-0) @ WT Woodson (1-1-0)
After a hot 3-0 start that saw the Washington-Liberty squad put up 23 goals, they hit a brick wall last Friday only scoring two in a one goal loss @ W. Springfield. They look to get back to their winning ways against a WT Woodson team who got blown out by Ireton, then blew out Centreville/Fairfax. Puck drops at 5:15 at Mt. Vernon.
Forest Park/Hylton (2-0-1) @ Lake Braddock/Park View (4-0-0)
It’s the featured game of the night in the CSHL as the South Division leader and undefeated Lake Braddock Bruins host second place Forest Park/Hylton at Prince William in what’s sure to be a wild game. Lake Braddock is averaging 5.5 goals for a game and only 1.75 against behind starting goalie Riley Burch who’s turned away 60/65 for a 1.88 GAA and .923 SV%. Forest Park won this game last season 5-4. Puck drop at 7:40 PM.
GM/Edison/Hayfield (0-3-0) @ TC Williams (4-0-0)
We’ve got win-less vs the unbeaten at the St. James tonight as George Mason/Edison travels to take on North Division leader and undefeated TC Williams, who has yet to find themselves a worthy opponent with their closest contest being a 5-2 win over Bishop Ireton. We’ll see what Gm/Edison can bring to the table, but i’d expect the Titans to be full throttle tonight. Puck drop at 8:40.
Colgan (2-1-0) @ Bishop Ireton (1-2-1)
The Colgan sharks look to pick up a second straight win as they travel to Mount Vernon tonight to take on Bishop Ireton at 9:00 PM. Colgan, just two Friday’s ago, pushed Lake Braddock to the brink in a hard fought 2-4 loss, but responded with a 10-1 win over South County the week after. Out side of their 8-3 win over WT Woodson, Ireton has struggled to score, so Colgan will look to jump on em early to get the W.
MAPHL
St. John’s (7-0-0) @ Spalding (2-0-1)
The high flying, hot start Cadets look to pick up their biggest win of the early go as they travel to a hostile Piney Orchard tonight to take on Spalding, a team coming off an MAPHL Championship loss and hungry to get back to the big stage. While at 7-0-0, this is only St Johns second league game. This is a huge early season match-up, and the two points could play a big role at the end of the season when it comes to seeding. Puck drop at 7:00 pm in Piney Orchard, and expect a BIG student section out for the Cavs
Gonzaga (2-0-0) @ Georgetown Prep (1-0-0)
It’s non-league, but it’s a huge one. Prep just got underway Wednesday with a 5-2 win over MSHL defending champs Winston Churchill, but holy jumpin are they in for a TOUGH match-up. The powerhouse Eagles come in a 2-0-0, beating Delaware Prep 9-0 and throttling DeMatha 7-1, so they are on fire. Expect this to be one of, if not the most intresting game in the DMV.
Mt. St. Joe (3-2-1) @ St. Paul’s (1-0-0)
It’s an MIAA battle as Mt St Joes travels to take on conference rival St. Pauls (who should be in the MAPHL, but that’s just me). Mt St Joes had that massive upset win over DeMatha just a few weeks ago, and while it’s not an MAPHL league game, it counts in the MIAA. Puck drop in Reisterstown at 3:45
Calvert Hall (1-2-0) @ DeMatha (1-3-0)
Another non-league tilt, but a huge one none the less because both of these teams haven’t started great… and they wanna turn that around. Calvert Hall see’s this game as an opportunity to make a statement, that the Cards of old are back and here to beat the hell out of you, win games, and collect them points. While DeMatha on the other hand, a power house year in and year out has suffered a few injuries and lost 3 of 4 to start, including a pounding at the hands of Gonzaga 7-1 earlier this week.
Bishop O’Connell V2 (2-0-1) @ Mt St Joes V2 (3-0-0)
It’s a battle of the top two teams in the MAPHL A division as O’Connell will travel to take on undefeated Mt St Joes. The Knights will lean haevily on Jackson Barbieri who has 5-3–8 through three games, leading the O’Connell squad in every point category. Mt St Joe is letting up only 2.66 goals a game, while O’Connell is scoring at a 5.66 goals a game clip. One of these trends will break open tonight, which will it be?
St. Mary’s Ryken (0-3-0) @ Good Counsel (0-1-0)
It’s a WCAC Capital Division championship rematch from last season as St Mary’s Ryken travels to take on Good Counsel. It’s non-league, but both teams are win-less and looking to turn things around early. (BTW, my WCAC trophy from last season is clean AF, how are ya)
NVSHL
Chantilly (2-0-0) @ Loudoun Valley (0-1-0)
It’s Norris division leading and undefeated Chantilly heading to Loudoun Valley tonight as puck drops at 5:30 from ION Arena. Chantilly looks to continue to ride superstar Owen Morgan who, in literally only two games, has 13 goals and 4 assists for 17 points… wow. Hey Loudoun Valley, maybe play two goalies tonight, just a thought.
Fauquier/Highands (2-0-0) @ Yorktown (1-0-0)
It’s early, but its a battle of unbeatens as Yorktown welcomes in a Falcon squad to the star ship for a 6:40 puck drop. Yorktown will need to shut down Roteman and Zervoudis who are averaging 2 points a game if they want this big win on home ice to keep them in the running for first in the Norris
Langley (1-1-0) @ Madison (0-2-0)
The defending NVSHL champs hit the road tonight for a 7:55 puck drop in Reston tonight as they take on Adams division rival Madison in a key early season battle. Expect the student sections on both sides to be jumpin, because I mean come on, there’s free pizza, why not show up and show out?
MSHL
River Hill (0-0-1) @ Marriotts Ridge (1-0-1)
It’s an early Howard conference showdown as River Hill travel to the Gardens to take on Marriotts Ridge for a 3:20 puck drop. Defending conference champs Ridge are looking to shoot up the standings as they sit 2 points behind leader Glenelg
Washington County (4-1-0) @ Urbana (1-1-0)
Monocacy Valley Conference action kicks off at 4:45 at Skate Frederick as first place Washington County travels to take on Urbana as they try to stay in first place. If Urbana wants a chance at an upset, they’ll need to shut down Graydon Joyce who’s potted 4-4–8 in his first 5 games and leads the offensive attack for the North Stars.
Middletown (1-1-0) @ Carroll County (2-2-0)
Same place, same division as above for this tilt as Middletown and Carroll County will throw down at 6:20 in a loaded Monocacy Valley night. It’s not tough to see that as the Carroll County offense goes, the team goes. In their two wins? 6 goals a game. In their two combined losses? Only one goal total. They’ll be looking to jump in the board early and let their offense go to work to get a big win tonight.
Winston Churchill (4-0-0) @ Bethesda/Chevy-Chase (4-1-0)
MASSIVEEEEEEE game here at Rockville Ice Arena tonight at 9:20 as the two top teams in the Mopntgomery conference, and arguably two of the top teams in the state go head to head for first place in the conference. Churchill, as we all know, the team to beat every year… 8x MSHL champs. BCC on the other hand? Some STUDS on that team, most notably Bowie Lanter, who’s got 5 tucks and 7 apples in the first five game. This games gonna be awesome, and we expect some fireworks.
Oakdale (0-1-0) @ Glenelg (2-0-1)
Here’s another big one, as Howard conference leader takes a step outside of their comfort zone to take on Oakdale from the Monocacy Valley and for some conference on conference bragging rights. Glenelg started 2-0 with two 11-1 wins, but have since tied and lost. They’ll look for a win tonight to get the momentum back in these key out of conference games that the MSHL keeps and eye on for end of the year rankings.
