Episode 34 is out now on iTunes Podcast and Spotify, and if you haven’t listened yet, figure it the fuck out and plug your headphones in (or turn on your air pods for all you spoiled folk) and TURN IT UP. It’s our first week of 2020, and first week of doing two episodes a week after you, the great fans, voted on two episodes a week instead of one long one. SOOO, we broke em down, #AllCaps episodes on Tuesdays, and all local puck talk on Thursday’s to get you ready for the Friday night slate in high school and the weekend ahead for the local junior and college teams.
Team’s of the Week
So let’s just jump right into our team of the week selections and broke down why we picked em…
COACH – Richmond General’s Premier
I’m ridin’ with the ROLLLLLLLL Gen’s premier squad after a hell of a weekend at the Winter Showcase up at the New England Sport’s center. Game one they would defeat the Pittsburgh Vengeance 4-1 where they would jump out to a 3-0 lead before sealing it with a fourth tuck in the 3rd. Game two was a 4-0 shutout over the Junior Bruins thanks to a 30 save shutout by Charles-Olivier LePage, followed by another shutout in game three vs the SkipJacks, again a 4-0 win, behind LePage’s 25 saves. Lastly, they would defeat the Toledo Cherokee 4-1. Here’s what impressed me the most over the tournament. Yes, they scored 16 goals and only allowed two… and yes, they scored 4 goals each game, but here’s the thing.. Game one was the ONLY game in which the Generals had a player score more than one goal with Jake Burke tucking two in the game. Every other game in the tournament in which they scored four goals all had tucks by four different GENS. If you’re coach LYKE, that’s what ya love to see, depth scoring, and scoring all up and down the lineup, not one guy doing it all.
AB – St. John’s
AB is rockin with St John’s after their impressive undefeated run in the Purple Puck… 29 goals for.. 12 against.. good for a +17 goal differential. Their seemingly only tough game was against the #4 O’Connell squad in a game that literally could have gone either way after the Cadets won it in a shootout. Outside of the local squads, The Hun school and Loyola Academy looked to be the best two squads in the tourney, but St Johns throttled them both 8-2 and 5-0.
KP – Potomac Patriots Elite
Powers is rolling with the Potomac Patriots Elite squad after a 2-2 weekend at the Winter Showcase, but that’s a hell of a weekend for the PPATS and hopefully a big confidence boost going forward. They sit at 8-25-1, so you can see how big a weekend split it for the boys. One of the wins was a 4-3 OT win over the #5 team in the entire league, the Springfield Pics. Here’s the thing.. the PIC’s went up 3-0 in the first… then a scoreless second period. Next thing ya know, the Pats POP THE HELL OFF for three straight in the third thanks to two from Chase Caravella and the third from Will Cundy, followed by the OT winner from the silky hands of Fisher Hall.
So there’s your three teams of the week for the first eppy of the new year. The rest of the episode is as expected, but way more detailed and in-depth analysis of each league. We break down the results, scoring and tendy leaders, and upcoming week in the NVSHL, MAPHL, CSHL and MSHL. We also debut our first ever Chirpin’ DMV power rankings and holy hell that was a lot tougher to break down than we expected. There’s not much college hockey going on, but we break down the Stevenson NCAA D3’s HOT HOT start, and obviously with college hockey, release the power rankings there too. Lastly we get at it with each of the Junior teams. USPHL Winter Showcase recaps for the local teams, and team Maryland in the EHL. We talk about the six game win streak the Black Bears had until losing in OT last weekend to the NE Generals, and break (kinda, but not really) of Wilmer Skoog leaving the team to join the Boston University Terriers squad.
Our interview for the episode is John Cotten, a great friend of ours that we’ve know for over 10 years when I played with his son Marquise wayyyy back in the day with the Bowie Bruins. We went to Purple Puck and had a great time shooting the shit with John, and talking about our time in the tournament way back win, and winning it BAACKKKKKK TO BACK. See pic below for the old squad.
