Here’s the deal with HS power rankings. They’ll be just like the college ones and start coming out every Monday to recap the week prior. We record on Monday nights and if you’re a pod person (which you better damn be) and you listen to Thursday local episodes, you’ll here the power rankings there too and get all the guys thoughts on the current state of teams and shift in the rankings. This week, there’s a few new faces in the honorable mentions, but top 10 wise, one team had a huge week, causing a two spot jump for them.
#1 – St. John’s (MAPHL) 16-2-1

My verdict from last week still stands that St John’s is the unanimous vote for top team in the DMV. My offer from last week still stands to where if you disagree, you have to bring me whatever your on that’s got your mind in a pretzel thinking otherwise. Bye week for the Cadets, but they’re off Lake Placid this weekend for a toughhhh tournament that’s only making that Cadet team stronger.

It was a solid start to the new year for the little Hoyas as they kick off 2020 with a sweep in league play, first defeating #6 DeMatha 6-3, followed by a road win vs a pesky St Albans team 4-1. That’s just the start they wanted as they now sit 5-1 in MAPHL league play, but their next two coming up against top five teams in Landon and Gonzaga.
Previous Results: WED vs #6 DeMatha 6-3 W, FRI @ St Albans 4-1 W
Next Up: 1/15 vs #4 Gonzaga (8-3-3)
#3 – Landon (MAPHL) 6-0-0
Previous Rank: 5

Highest Rank: 3
Alright, i’m officially tagging Landon as BACK. This squad is goooood. I had my doubts about their January coming up with a ton of games due to the fact they only had four prior to the holidays, and there is still a lot of hockey left, but week one of the new year? FAT success for the Bears as they roll and put up 16 goals in two games including a 7-2 thumping of Gonzaga…. and miss me with that “but the opponent was shorthanded” crap.
Previous Results: WED vs Spalding 9-2 W, FRI @ #4 Gonzaga 7-2 W
Next Up: 1/14 @ Bullis (1-5-0 in league play), 1/15 vs Ryken (1-10-0), 1/17 vs St Stephens St Agnes (3-3-1)
#4 – Gonzaga (MAPHL) 8-3-3

The Eagles are slipping a spot his week after a 1-1 showing last week in their two games at the Fort. Game one, a 4-3 win over Winston Churchill.. that doesn’t overly impress me seeing how Churchill has fared against the other prep school so far this season so I was expecting a Gonzaga blowout. They then turn around and give up a five spot in the first to Landon en route to a brutal 2-7 loss. They’ve got a huge chance to prove themselves this week as they travel to take on the #2 Hoyas.. a team Gonzaga beat earlier in the season.
Previous Results: WED vs #9 Churchill 4-3 W, FRI vs #3 Landon 2-7 L
Next Up: 1/15 @ #2 Georgetown Prep (7-2-0), 1/18-1/20 Chicago Tournament
#5 – Bishop O’Connell (10-6-1)
Previous Rank: 4
Rank Change: ▼1
Highest Rank: 4
O’Connell is dropping a spot due to that Landon leap, but i’m still not quite ready to flip O’Connell and Gonzaga quite yet. Yes, I know O’Connell beat Zaga straight up, but I can’t yet look pass the loss to DeMatha and Prep (who the eagles both beat) and the tie to St Albans. They have a one game week ahead and it’s a tough trap game for BOC. Yes, they should beat Spalding, BUT.. it’s a Friday night at Piney and the Spalding fans get rockin. If the Knights can’t get one or two past Berke early, he could go on to shut them out like he did in his 62 save performance vs DeMatha, so O’Connell needs to not get caught over looking this game and get their much needed 2 points.

Two game week for the Stags, one being a league game in which they had a lead!… but dropped a tough one 6-3 vs the #2 Hoyas squad. They finished the week on Friday with a 3-3 tie to a North Alleghany that I don’t know a damn thing about. One game week ahead for DM as they host a hot Calvert Hall team for a big 2 points in the MAPHL.
Previous Results: WED @ #2 Georgetown Prep 3-6 L, FRI vs North Alleghany 3-3 T
Next Up: 1/17 vs Calvert Hall (1-5-0 in league play)
#7 – Marriott’s Ridge (MSHL) 9-0-1
Previous Rank: 7

Highest Rank: 7
The rematch between the #StngGang and Glenelg went Ridge’s way as they skated to a 4-0 victory**** yes, I put the asterisk due to Glenelg having a stand in goalie.. but then again, a goalie can’t help you score goals and the #StangGang shut out Glenelg.

#8 – Mt. St. Joe’s (MAPHL) 6-4-4

Mt St Joe’s was scheduled for a two game week last week, Monday the first, skating to a tie in an MIAA and MAPHL league game vs rival Spalding in which both teams would put up one a piece. They were supposed to play the NEXT NIGHT vs St Johns, but did the snow save them? IDK if you can take back-to-backs into effect for high school kids, but a night after skating to a tough 1-1 tie you gotta take on the #1 team?? No thanks, i’ll take that reschedule all day if i’m the Gaels.
Previous Results: MON vs Spalding 1-1 T, TUES @ #1 St John’s CANCELLED

#9 – Winston Churchill (MSHL) 9-5-1

Two game week for Churchill and, depending on whop you ask, either a good or bad week. They lost to #4 Gonzaga on the road 4-3. PROS: Tight one goal loss. CONS: Loss… they then played conference rival Wootton Friday night in a 3-3 tie. PROS: got a point, good tie vs a good team. CONS: blew a 3-1 lead.
Previous Results: WED @ #4 Gonzaga 3-4 L, FRI @ Wootton 3-3 T
Next Up: 1/14 @ Walter Johnson (5-4-1)
#10 – TC Williams (CSHL) 7-0-0
Previous Rank: 10

Highest Rank: 10
TC Williams is in a tight race for the top spot in the North with Washington-Liberty.. both at 14 points, but the Titans are 7-0-0, while the Generals are 7-1-0. The Titans next game? Washington-Liberty for sole possession of first in the North… you just have to wait till Jan 24th to see that one, though.
